A bridge built to replace one that collapsed during floods that left a police officer dead has won an Engineering Award.

PC Bill Barker was checking for people in the water when Northside Bridge in Workington was washed away in 2009.

Upon completion Princess Anne opened the £11m, 152-metre replacement road and pedestrian structure.

The bridge, built by Balfour Beatty, was named winner in the Builder and Engineer Awards 2013. 

 

The project scooped the top prize in the Public Sector Project category at an awards ceremony in Manchester.

It is the latest in a series of accolades for the new Northside Bridge, which also won praise in other UK construction awards.

Construction of the bridge started in August 2011 and was the largest single project in Cumbria's flood recovery programme.

The bridge's concrete piers are clad in recovered sandstone from the original Northside Bridge, destroyed in the floods in November 2009.
